Absolutely Fabulous premiere a smashing succes
NOT quite bedecked in LaCroix but damn well as fine, Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley took to Sydney鈥檚 pink carpet premiere for Absolutely Fabulous: the movie. They looked nothing short of it, either.
It鈥檚 the first time their infamous alter egos of 25 years, Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone, have featured as main characters on the big screen.
They re-emerged some years later for a revival series, but their latest hurrah is one to set a new benchmark.
If the drag queens, LGBTI personalities, entertainers and designers present for the Australian leg of the movie鈥檚 premiere weren鈥檛 indication enough, time and all the Bollinger in the world hasn鈥檛 tarnished their popularity amongst fans.
鈥淚t鈥檚 easy,” Saunders said on her pink carpet parade. 鈥淲e鈥檙e up to year 25 and we鈥檝e always done something every four years, so it鈥檚 easy.鈥
The pair have been so influential through their work in the comedy space, that they鈥檙e proud of the fact their influence has resulted in people drinking and falling over a lot more in comedy.
鈥淲e seemed extreme in 1991 and now we seem completely normal,鈥 Lumley said, with a laugh.
Thrilled with the reception they received from LGBTIQ fans all over the world, Saunders and Lumley couldn鈥檛 be more proud.
鈥淚t鈥檚 rather lovely; we鈥檝e had a nice reception. We always get a nice reception in the LGBT community, so it鈥檚 been lovely,鈥 explained Saunders warmly. 鈥淲e owe them a lot 鈥榗os they kind of broke it in America for us; we became a cult within the gay community, so it鈥檚 been fantastic!鈥 she continued.
鈥淭hey鈥檝e been so supportive鈥 of two old birds!鈥 they both laughed.
Ever the diplomat and well-and-truly engrained into the Australian society, Saunders and Lumley made a point to include many familiar Australian faces in the film for varied cameos.
鈥淚 have to say you shouldn鈥檛 have a favourite, but if I did it has to be Dame Edna,鈥 said Saunders. 鈥淚 mean, she鈥檚 been in our lives and a heroine of mine for so long that she turned up鈥 though, only to up-stage Joan Collins, I know that.鈥
鈥淚t made my life,鈥 she said.
Nothing could quite top Lumley鈥檚 top moment in the film, though, something she鈥檇 agree would be one for the history books.
鈥淜ate Moss was a cameo and special, as was Stella McCartney; but to be tasered by Rebel Wilson is something else,鈥 she laughed.
And as for how they鈥檝e kept it going for all these years through all the hangovers?
鈥淢ore drink!鈥 said Saunders. 鈥淒on鈥檛 ever let the hangover take over your life!鈥
Spoken like the quintessentially fabulous.
Absolutely Fabulous: the movie is in cinemas around the country from Thursday 4 August 2016.
