As a proud 78er can we please move on from this grandstanding by some opportunistic politicians demanding a tokenistic apology for the horrendous actions of the past, it will not change what happened on that historic night.
We should focus on the discrimination happening now, i.e denying marriage equality & more recently the Gayby Baby ban in schools in NSW. Equally we should safe guard the rights we have already achieved, for make no mistake the right wing religious zealots will quickly dismantle these given the opportunity.

This formal apology from Fairfax media and the NSW Parliament is long overdue and needed immediately! I am deeply embarrassed to be Australian at our lack of LGBTI rights. Clearly homophobia is a big Australian problem! Just look at our 1961 federal marriage statutes and four states VIC*, SA*, NT and QLD – still banning same-sex couples from adopting children!

* Adoption statutes are under current review in both VIC and SA, to be finished and reported back to both the VIC and SA government, by the end of this year!

Your article omitted to mention Clr Forster’s motion sought as well an apology from Fairfax for publishing the names, addresses and occupations of those arrested by Police. Many lost their jobs as result of the publication. Fairfax was the only media outlet to publish such detail, even the Murdoch press refrained from doing so. It was extremely unusual, even at that time, for a media outlet to publish all the details of a charged person. Fairfax has steadfastly refused to apologize for the last 37 years and just 6 months ago knocked back another request it do so.
