It never surprises me, that when it comes to hate crimes, governments (lately Labor) either choose to belatedly penalise extreme behaviour; or the least, and most superficial (eg Nazi insignia; or the salute).
What’s missing is the middle: the acts of hate speech, which do not incite violence. These are the most common instances of hate, which are the most insidious – and which could still lead to violence.
I’m not up to date with NSW, but my understanding is that the NSW hate speech laws are outdated, not inclusive of all queer people, and have a too high threshold.
This is where reform must be focused. I think Alex Greenwich has been doing this. These efforts must continue. Happy to be corrected if there have been more recent developments.
