What they did was commit offences against the crimes act and the Marine Safety Act. The crimes act offence carries a custodial sentence. You can engage in protest activity lawfully however you cannot stop a person or a company from doing what they lawfully entitled to do, in this case, export coal and operate a port. You could better utilise your protest energy in engaging with politicians and trying to change policy rather than annoying lots of hard working people including the police.
