Miley Cyrus launches charity to help vulnerable gay youth

MILEY聽Cyrus may not be a聽stranger to provocative public statements, but she is now making headlines for the right reasons after launching a charity to help homeless and LGBT youth.

The charity, the n, was launched May 5 with a music clip staring Cyrus singing alongside Joan Jet,聽encouraging people to聽donate while promising聽more special music collaborations.

Cyrus said the聽Happy Hippie Foundation is dedicated to fighting the injustices faced by homeless youth, LGBT youth and other vulnerable populations.

“The position I’m in, I feel like I’ve got a lot of power… but so many kids don’t feel that way. They’re under their parents’ rule,” she聽told the Associated Press.

No stranger to helping raise awareness on聽homelessness, Cyrus had a homeless man accept her聽award for Video of the Year and the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.

On the topic of homelessness, she聽that “It’s something that everyone sees…聽It’s like the birds chirping. We’re consciously ignoring it at all times, but it’s always happening right in front of us”.

She also said she hopes聽to improve the lives of homeless LGBTI kids by creating digital support groups with the money raised.

“It’s not going to be an overnight process,” she said.

“You’ve got to get into a lot of people’s brains and you’ve got to really make this a topic.”
