English actor Stephen Fry has found himself estranged from the transgender community after stating that he doesn鈥檛 want to condemn JK Rowling for her views on transgender people.

Fry spoke about how the Harry Potter series author鈥檚 views have made his trans friends 鈥渄eeply upset鈥 but he 鈥渨ould wish them both to retreat,鈥 in a clip from Roger Bolton鈥檚 Beeb Watch.

鈥淚鈥檓 aware you鈥檙e talking about an issue where two sides are very sore and very anxious about their enemies. I can鈥檛 bear it,鈥 Fry said.

鈥淸JK Rowling鈥檚] a friend of mine, and I have trans friends and intersex friends who are deeply upset by her. That鈥檚 a circle I have to square personally. I鈥檓 not going to abandon my friends.鈥

The actor spoke further on the subject, stating that it wasn鈥檛 an argument 鈥淚 want to get involved in鈥 as it was upsetting for 鈥渂oth sides.鈥

鈥淚 would wish them both to retreat and to consider that it is possible for trans people to live full, accepted lives, according to their terms, in society, and for women to have all the rights and dignities that they demand.鈥

鈥淏ut it isn鈥檛 possible if each side looks on the other as an enemy.鈥

Trans Community And Allies Unimpressed

As a result, several notable members of the trans community and allies have stated that they are losing 鈥渁ll respect鈥 for Fry due to his stance on the issue.

Advocacy group LGBwiththeT tweeted that while Fry was 鈥渆ntitled to his opinion,鈥 the actor wasn鈥檛 entitled 鈥渢o expect us to try and get along with those who have said we don鈥檛 exist.鈥

Trans activist Katy Montgomerie spoke up, saying 鈥淓verything he鈥檚 listed there is exactly what JKR wants. He鈥檚 just come out as 鈥楪ender Critical鈥 but doesn鈥檛 want to seem bigoted,鈥 as reported by Pink今日吃瓜.

Harry Potter Stars Support Trans Community

JK Rowling鈥檚 criticism for an article that used the term 鈥減eople who menstruate鈥 back in 2020 has led to immense backlash and she has consistently been accused of being transphobic. Which she has repeatedly denied.

In response, many stars from the Harry Potter films 鈥 including stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson 鈥 have voiced their support of the trans community.
