Wedding industry urged to speak up

Wedding industry urged to speak up

More than 500 wedding-related small businesses have been urged to make a submission to the Senate inquiry into same-sex marriage.

Australian Marriage Equality (AME) contacted businesses including celebrants, wedding planners and florists following research by US economist Professor Lee Badgett that showed businesses could benefit up to $160 million over three years if gay marriage was allowed in Australia.

“All businesses who supply the wedding industry have a lot to gain by supporting marriage equality,†AME spokesman Alex Greenwich said.

“Those businesses that contribute to achieving marriage equality will be the first to be rewarded when this reform happens.â€

Former NSW premier Kristina Keneally, the Hon Michael Kirby, and film director and screenwriter Stephan Elliot are some of the high-profile names who have already made submissions to the inquiry.

  1. Would seem kind of bias though wouldnt it? Considering we gays have a monopoly on Wedding planners…..

  3. A submission couldn’t be easier ! All small business can see the benefit of a whole new market of potential customers so please take a few minutes to share your thoughts on how you would benefit. Marriage Equality should be a given but if you mix that in with the benefits for business as well the case becomes even harder to argue against !
